Frequently Asked Questions

Our potential customers often have similar questions, let’s answer those.

Can I put a skylight anywhere on my house?

No. Skylights must be positioned so as to not interfere with ductwork, plumbing and electrical. Selecting the right spot for a skylight is the first step in our professional skylight service. Larger skylights may also require reframing.

Can I vent my house using a skylight?

Yes! Skylights come in many different variations and many of them can open, which can allow hot air to escape your house.

When should I replace my skylight?

Your skylight has a lifespan of 20 years, and should usually be replaced with the roof. The argon gas between the panes of your skylight, which insulates the skylight, depletes after 20 years. Newer skylights boast newer technology which allows them to last longer and hold up better against weather. Triple pane, solar powered, noise reducing, UV resistant and many other technologies make new skylights much better than older ones.

How much does a new skylight cost?

A new skylight will cost from $3000 – $5000. This includes cutting into the roof, framing the skylight shaft, spray foam insulation, drywalling, and painting. It also includes the flashing and roofing required to waterproof the skylight from the top.

How much will it cost to replace my existing skylight?

Replacing an existing skylight will cost from $300 – $1000.

I like the natural light, but I don’t want a hot spot in my living space. Is there a way to reduce the amount of light coming in through my skylight?

Yes! There are multiple options that you can have on your skylight. You can order blinds for many of our skylights. These blinds can be manual or electric closing. New skylights include a tinting that protects from UV rays.

Should I get an opening skylight even though I live next to train tracks or an airport?

Yes! You can get a skylight that senses noise and self closes when the outdoor noise would bother you.

Can I put a skylight on a flat roof?

Yes! Z&J roofing can properly install and flash your new skylight on your flat roof.

How long does a skylight last?

Your skylight has a lifespan of 20 years, and should usually be replaced with the roof. The argon gas between the panes of your skylight, which insulates the skylight, depletes after 20 years. Newer skylights boast newer technology which allows them to last longer and hold up better against weather. Triple pane, solar powered, noise reducing, UV resistant and many other technologies make new skylights much better than older ones.

What is the difference between a deck-mount skylight and a fixed-curb skylight?

A deck mount skylight has the curb permanently fastened to the skylight and attaches directly to your drywall.
A fixed-curb skylight has to be framed to the roof structure, and has a higher profile. The drywall will need to be extended to cover the framing.

Are there other options aside from skylights to bring natural light into my living space?

YES! Sun Tunnels bring the light from the sun to your living space! A sun tunnel is more versatile and we are able to maneuver sun tunnels into more difficult areas of your ceiling.

Will the sunlight from my skylight damage my flooring/walls/furniture, etc.?

Older skylights do not protect from UV rays and after long periods of time you may see damage on wood, flooring, or fabric from the UV rays.
Newer skylights are UV resistant, and will protect your wood, fabric and flooring from sun bleaching and sun damage.

How do I keep the rain out of my opening skylight?

You can get an opening skylight that has a self closing technology. These skylights have a sensor that regulates the humidity in the air, and when the outside air humidity climbs to a certain point it predicts rain or snow and closes automatically.

Is there a skylight that can be part of my home automation system?

Yes! Velux offers an app-controlled skylight that can open or close from anywhere in the world! Call us for more details.

Is it possible to put more than one skylight in the same space?

Yes! Velux offers linking skylights that can maximize the light coming into your living space!

We’d be more than happy to answer any additional questions you may have.
